NATO on Thursday condemned a cyberattack on Albania that Tirana and Washington blamed on Iran, and pledged to bolster the alliance member’s defenses towards hackers.

“We stand in solidarity with Albania following the current cyber assault on its nationwide data infrastructure,” NATO allies stated.

“We strongly condemn such malicious cyber actions designed to destabilise and hurt the safety of an Ally, and disrupt the each day lives of residents.”

The alliance pledged to “assist Albania in strengthening its cyber defence capabilities to face up to and repel such malicious cyber actions sooner or later.”

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama on Wednesday accused Iran of directing a cyberattack towards Albanian establishments on July 15 in a bid to “paralyze public providers and hack knowledge and digital communications from the federal government programs.”

Albania, which joined NATO in 2009, broke diplomatic relations with Tehran in retaliation.

The 2 international locations have been bitter foes for years, because the Balkan state started internet hosting members of the opposition Folks’s Mujahedeen of Iran, or Mujahedeen-e-Khalq (MEK), on its soil.

The US warned of “additional motion” towards Iran because it condemned what it referred to as the “unprecedented” cyberattack towards ally Albania.

Iran rejected the accusation it was behind the cyberattack as “baseless” and referred to as Albania’s determination to sever diplomatic ties “an ill-considered and short-sighted motion”.
